techbyleon’s RePod: A Week with Spotify, AirPods and an Old Watch

A spare Watch, Spotify Premium and AirPods give techbyleon a music player he likes enough to keep on his desk. His week-plus impressions include one iPod difference.

About a week into using RePod, techbyleon had found something he liked: music ready on an old Apple Watch, AirPods connected, and a little player he wanted to leave on his desk. The Watch that had spent months unused had become an object he enjoyed picking up.

He already wore an Apple Watch Ultra. His older Watches still worked, and letting them sit around bothered him. Techpod’s iPod-inspired case gave one of them a role that suited his Spotify listening—and an appearance he kept coming back to.

TL;DR — What They Love About RePod

  • His Spotify-and-AirPods listening experience.
  • The weight and feel that surprised him when he first held it.
  • A player he likes enough to keep on his desk.

What They Use RePod For

  • Playing music prepared on his Watch with Spotify Premium and AirPods.
  • Giving a spare Watch a place on his desk.

The music he already uses, in a player he wants to hold

Leon’s listening setup uses Spotify Premium and AirPods. In his follow-up after roughly a week to a week and a half, he describes enjoying playback from the Watch and being pleased with how his AirPods work with it. That gives the familiar little shape a useful purpose: the music lives on hardware he already owns.

RePod supplies the handheld body; the Watch supplies Spotify, storage and playback. For today’s Spotify app, direct listening requires Premium, a supported Watch running watchOS 10 or later, and paired Bluetooth headphones. Spotify currently lists Series 4 or later; the Watch also needs to support the required software. Offline listening requires downloading the music to the Watch beforehand. Follow Spotify’s current download instructions for your setup.

Something worth leaving on the desk

The physical object mattered to Leon from the moment he held it. He had expected something that felt like plastic; the weight of his unit surprised him. After using it, he was still enthusiastic about the look and wanted to keep it on his desk, where he imagined people asking what it was.

If you enjoy choosing a small object as much as choosing what plays, that part of his experience may be familiar. The old Watch already had the music software. A screen above a large wheel gave Leon a form he found appealing enough to keep in view.

The wheel feels familiar; selection stays on the Watch

Leon also points out a difference anyone with iPod memories should know. The center clicks, but pressing it does not select an item. RePod’s center button is decorative. The outer wheel mechanically turns the Watch’s Digital Crown, with behavior depending on the app and watchOS; the touchscreen and Watch controls still handle the other actions.

That leaves a clear choice. If you want a spare Watch to become a small, tactile music player—and you like Leon’s desk-and-AirPods setup—explore RePod from Techpod. Choose the version for your Watch’s generation and case size.
