How to Set Up RePod: Install Your Apple Watch and Test the Scroll Wheel

Set up RePod by matching your Apple Watch, adjusting current off-wrist settings, following Techpod installation guidance and testing the outer wheel on the same app screen.

Set up RePod by checking the Apple Watch first, changing the current off-wrist settings, installing the Watch with Techpod's instructions, and repeating the same Digital Crown test through the outer wheel. RePod by Techpod is a handheld case that turns an Apple Watch into a Mini Phone for music and everyday essentials. The case needs no Bluetooth pairing, companion app or jailbreak.

What should work when setup is complete?

The Watch should be awake and unlocked, the display should face the correct direction, and the outer wheel should turn the Digital Crown on the same app screen you tested before installation. The touchscreen still handles taps. The center disc is decorative.

Before you install the Apple Watch

  • Charge and unlock the Watch.
  • Confirm its exact generation and case size against the current RePod selector.
  • Open the app and screen you plan to use.
  • Turn the Digital Crown and note what the current screen does.

This baseline separates a Watch or app issue from a fit or seating issue. If the Digital Crown has no action on that screen before installation, the RePod wheel will not add one.

RePod setup in seven steps

  1. Remove the Apple Watch band. Hold the band release button on the back of the Watch and slide the band sideways. Apple advises against forcing the band through the slot.
  2. Set the current Techpod orientation. On Apple Watch, open Settings > General > Orientation. Techpod's current Help guide specifies Wrist: Left and Digital Crown: Left for RePod. This is the current RePod setting, so recheck the Help page when setting up another version.
  3. Prepare the off-wrist lock behavior. For a smoother handheld RePod experience, Techpod's current setup guide recommends opening Settings > Passcode and turning Wrist Detection off. Read the tradeoffs below before changing it.
  4. Adjust the display. Open Settings > Display & Brightness and turn Wake on Wrist Raise off for the current handheld setup. Always On can remain at your preference. You can also review Wake on Crown Rotation and Wake Duration for the way you plan to use the Watch.
  5. Install the Watch with Techpod's visual instructions. Follow Techpod's current setup video and the instructions for your exact RePod version. Stop if the Watch does not sit as shown. Do not force the Watch or case.
  6. Wake and unlock the Watch. Return to the same app and screen used for the baseline test.
  7. Turn the outer wheel gently. Confirm that the screen produces the same Digital Crown response you saw before installation. Use the touchscreen for on-screen buttons and selection.
Three Apple Watch settings to review for RePod: orientation, Wrist Detection and display wake behavior
Review the current orientation, Wrist Detection and display settings before installing the Watch.

Understand the Wrist Detection tradeoff

Apple Watch normally locks automatically when Wrist Detection is on and the Watch is removed from your wrist. Turning Wrist Detection off can reduce repeated locking during handheld use, which is why Techpod currently recommends it for RePod setup.

Apple also documents important effects. The Watch no longer locks and unlocks automatically. Apple Pay asks for the passcode when you authorize a payment. Some wrist-based measurements and related alerts, plus automatic emergency calling after a hard fall, are turned off. Review those changes before deciding which setting fits your use.

If you prefer to keep Wrist Detection on, expect to enter the passcode after the Watch leaves your wrist. Test that routine in the RePod case before relying on it away from home.

Choose display settings for the job

Setting What it changes How to decide
Wake on Wrist Raise Wakes the display when worn and raised Techpod's current handheld setup turns it off because the Watch is not on a wrist.
Wake on Crown Rotation Allows a Crown turn to wake the display gradually Test it with the exact Watch and screen brightness you prefer.
Wake Duration Controls how long the display stays awake after a tap Choose a duration that gives you enough time to use the screen.
Return to Clock Controls when the Watch returns from an app to the clock Choose the current Apple option that fits the app you use most.

No single display value fits every task. The success check is practical: you can wake, unlock and return to the intended app without fighting the screen state.

Test the same screen before and after installation

Test Action Expected result
Before installation Turn the Watch's Digital Crown on the chosen app screen. The screen performs an action supported by that app and watchOS, such as moving a list or changing volume on a supported playback screen.
After installation Return to that same screen and turn the RePod outer wheel. The outer wheel mechanically turns the Digital Crown and the screen repeats the supported Crown response.
Same-screen test comparing the native Apple Watch Digital Crown before installation with the RePod outer wheel after installation
Use one app screen for both tests. The RePod outer wheel should repeat the Digital Crown action supported on that screen.

If the RePod wheel does not respond

  1. Remove the Watch and test the native Digital Crown on the same app screen.
  2. Confirm that the Watch is awake and unlocked.
  3. Check that the RePod version matches both the Watch generation and case size.
  4. Compare the Watch position with Techpod's instructions. Stop if you feel unexpected resistance.
  5. Contact Techpod with the order number, Watch generation and size, app name, screen used and a short video of the behavior.

Do not force the wheel or open the mechanism. A concise test on one screen gives support a clearer starting point than switching among several apps.

RePod setup questions

Does RePod require an app or Bluetooth pairing?

No. The case needs no companion app, account, subscription or Bluetooth pairing. Apple Watch apps and services keep their own requirements.

Does RePod require a jailbreak?

No. RePod works with normal Apple Watch controls and current watchOS settings.

Why does orientation matter?

Orientation controls the display direction and how the Digital Crown responds. Techpod's current RePod setup uses Left for both Wrist and Digital Crown.

Should I turn off Wrist Detection for RePod?

Techpod's current guide recommends turning it off for a smoother handheld experience. Apple documents changes to automatic locking, Apple Pay authorization and several wrist-based features, so review those effects before choosing the setting.

What if the wheel works in one app but not another?

Digital Crown behavior depends on the active screen, app and watchOS. Test the native Crown on the same screen. RePod carries that Crown movement; it does not add an action the app does not support.

Finish with one real task

Open the music, timer or other Watch task you actually plan to carry. Wake the display, unlock it, turn the wheel and use the touchscreen. Once that complete routine works, the RePod setup is ready for daily use.

Still choosing a case? Identify the Watch generation and size, then check the current RePod selection.
